DETROIT RECYCLES

The goal of the City's recycling program is:
To encourage all Detroit residents to reduce, reuse and recycle
Reduce – cut back on materials for disposal; buy products with less packaging; buy only what you need
Reuse – Try to find other acceptable uses for leftover products and items
Recycle – Recycle products or containers if you can
To determine the most cost-effective method of implementing citywide recycling in Detroit by collecting data from a pilot curbside recycling
program in two designated areas and from the recycling drop-off locations
The City of Detroit recognizes that recycling is an important step in saving and improving the environment and that recycling has a number of
benefits.
For example, recycling saves natural resources, energy, landfill space and money, and creates less air and water pollution.
The City is working to save money and reduce pollution. Your participation in the recycling effort is needed to make this program a success.
As part of an effort be more environmentally responsible, the City of Detroit Department of Public Works is launching a campaign to encourage all
residents to recycle. Most residents can participate by dropping off recyclable items at various locations throughout the city.

Beginning in July 2009, the City of Detroit will begin a pilot curbside recycling program, which will include about 30,000 households on the east

Formed in June, 2006 Urban Organicz is a community-based youth development organization that uses the power of music, media and hands on instructional training to inspire inner city youth! Through art, culinary, literacy and urban farming activities,we strive to expand hope, encourage creativity and empower youth to utilize vacant land available through adopt-a-lot programs to grow fruit and vegetables year-round in hoop houses.

After five years of planning and networking, we have established Urban Organicz Chapters in Los Angeles, Detroit (East & West Side), New York, Chicago, Dallas & Pittsburgh. We expect additional expansion in Cincinnati, District of Columbia, Miami, Philadelphia, & Houston by the end of 2013.

From October 1st, 2011- December 12th, 2013, Urban Organicz Detroit will host a series of Hip-Hop Poetry Scholarship Competitions & Hip Hop Green Dinners across the Nation. Our purpose for organizing such activities is to engage the community, support organizations with efforts similar to ours and dually be a learning and recruiting piece in communities that are searching for the chasing cool of environmental stewardship.

In the summer of 2012, the Urban Organicz Detroit Chapter will launch the Urban Organicz Seeds Summer Program. The Program will run from May to September, Monday-Thursday from 10am-1pm. Participants are recruited from area high schools, and attend hands on classes in the field at various farm plots and the UO Detroit Youth Farm Stands throughout the city.

For some time now, I have wanted to read Fast Food Nation! Ill be honest, a few years ago a friend of mine mentioned the book to me and I just never got around to it. Fast Food Nation is about the history of fast food and how it is impacting our society today. The tag line for Fast Food Nation is : The Dark Side of the All-American Meal"

According to the Author of Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser, fast food began in Southern California and took root along interstate highways. He mentions McDonald's actually points out all the companies secrets and flaws. We all grew up loving and knowing who Ronald McDonald was and today he is still a prominent figure due to the fact that McDonald's biggest investment is in marketing & advertising. They also own more playgrounds than any other private firm in the US.

I personally feel that McDonald's food isn't good 'TASTY" and I do believe they market and advertise it in a way that is appealing. The fact is McDonald's has a strong business model, owns the most real estate in the nation and sadly according to Schlosser we spend more money on fast food than higher education. Which one has an addiction factor? I know Mickey D's will always be around, is never going any where...they are one of the largest buyers of beef, pork and potatoes. However, when will they change their model to suit the needs of youth in need of more nutritious food? One might argue that McDonalds is cheap...and fast..but what is the overall benefit? Colorful Packaging & Empty Nutrients? Im not saying you can't eat McDonalds at all because they will always be around...however when is the consumer going to demand a change for the benefit of the society?

Urban Organicz Detroit By Tracy Stevens (A Better Education)

A friend recently loaned me the movie “The Power of Community – How Cuba Survived Peak Oil”. It was a documentary telling of how the embargo nearly crippled Cuba, but also on how Cuba became stronger as a result of it. Out of necessity, Cuba transformed nearly every facet of its society. It changed the way communities were laid out and fed for power. The bicycle and mass transportation dominated the streets. The average Cuban lost 20 pounds through biking and walking and eating a lot less and a lot healthier. Where they had formerly been one of the highest users of chemical fertilizers and oil-based pesticides on industrial farms, they were now farming every piece of arable land organically. This was true in Urban settings (Permaculture) in addition to Cooperatives and smaller farms that people could have free of charge from the government as long as they were growing food on it. Their country is now being studied by many countries around the world as the rest of humanity prepares for the inevitable peak oil stage. For Cuba, peak oil came artificially early through harsh embargoes, but it turned out to be a gift in many ways.

Just as Cuba turned adversity into opportunity, Detroit is facing similar circumstances. Detroit has been in decline for decades and it is only getting worse as Michigan’s economy, highly dependent on the auto industry, faces significant challenges. Detroit’s landscape is littered with abandoned buildings and lots, but this adversity has many groups poised to make some incredibly positive changes for the city.

Urban Organicz Detroit is a not-for-profit, large scale, urban farming program founded by Ashley Powell, Mandisa McCowin, Brandon Chambers, DeCinces Martin and Teeshlee Hawkins . Their mission is to revitalize and stabilize Detroit’s economy by using vacant lots to grow vegetables, fruit, and grains for lunches in Detroit Public Schools and for sale at local restaurants and farmer’s markets. Doing so will attain the goals of providing jobs, agricultural education, healthy food for schools and communities, and motivation for young people to be environmental leaders in the urban community. The organization has adopted 10 lots in northwest Detroit and they expect that by the summer of 2010, over 6,000 students from Detroit Public Schools participating and managing the urban farm plots in their neighborhoods.

They are opening up these opportunities to those interested in working and/or living with them. In return for living in the Urban Organicz House as a Co-Op member, a small percentage of time will be used to manage gardens surrounding the property; recruit and manage volunteers; fundraise; and most important of all use their creativity/entrepreneurial skills to contribute to the community. The Greening of Detroit’s mission is to improve the quality of life in the city through reforestation and educational projects. They provide students and educators with the tool to increase their environmental science skills and stewardship. I love how these and many other groups in Detroit are seizing on the opportunity to turn Detroit around by making it a healthier, sustainable, inviting community while encouraging young people to lead the way. I hope that, like Cuba, Detroit will make adversity its reason to transform itself and in doing so, prepare the students of Detroit schools to advise and educate the rest of us on how to do it in our own communities! How great it would be to see Detroit filled with greens and vegetables, and young students taking back Detroit one green, sustainable lot at a time!

The one thing most humans find hard to do is admit they were wrong about individual based on their ability to do something or actions they do. Those, who achieve things many people it was impossible are believe to be call haters. The term hater to me is like being called a racist these days. In the fact when people looked at the individual who they have doubts in history, especially since it is hard to know a person well. This goes for teams as well, and this past weekend me and countless of others have to admit we were wrong about few teams.

One such team was Manchester United, as a Chelsea fan; I thought Chelsea could easily over take Man U and win the Premier League title. Then, on May 8 in the winner take all match between the teams. Chelsea lost to Manchester United (2-1). And it was a matter of time when Man U finally wraps this race up. This past Saturday Manchester United did their job by earning a draw against Blackburn and winning the Premier League title. Sunday's match against Blackpool will be nothing more than a two hour long celebration and will be fill with complaints from a few people (mostly from fans whose teams are facing relegation). Anyway, I did my job by congratulating the guys in the Red jerseys.

Among the teams, most people thought were not good enough to do something great, like the Miami Heat are on in the Eastern Conference Finals. Another team from the NBA who many people believe cannot do what they are doing is the Dallas Mavericks, who they swept the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round of the playoffs. Now, they are in the Western Conference finals and done quite well in Game 1. The San Jose Sharks and Vancouver Canucks of the NHL are in the Western Conference Finals after years of people who watch hockey believe they are nothing more than chokers on the biggest stage. These teams are proving us wrong in the way we think of them in sports and should be congratulated and be happy for their success.
